Hundreds turn out to support troops
SARNIA: Red. Remember everyone deployed.
That was the message more than 150 Canadians and Americans shared at Sarnia’s Royal Canadian Legion on Thursday to commemorate the 64th anniversary of D-Day.
The majority of the crowd donned red shirts in support of the Canadian soldiers deployed in 16 operations across the world.
“We’re wearing these shirts so soldiers know, whether they’re training, deployed or at home, that we will never forget them and we’re proud of them,” said Kevin McHarg, a member of Sarnia’s fire department as well as the Canadian Ambassador for Hero to Hero.
Hero to Hero is an U.S.-based program that has sent more than 25,000 shirts donated by emergency-response workers to soldiers overseas.
“Those men and women receive the shirts, and it means the world to them,” said program founder Liz Jackson.
However, people must not forget to support the families of soldiers at home, she added.
“I’ve had a soldier tell me that they don’t have the hard job. The really hard job in the military is being the one back home ... and a lot of people forget these (family members). We need to show them our appreciation, too,” she said.
